Description

Pinnwala Elephant orphanage is the home of Asian elephants. Pinnawala has the
largest herd of captive elephants in the world. It was established in 1975 by the Sri
Lanka Department of Wildlife Conservation where locate at northeast of Kegalle
town in Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka. The orphanage was established to
feed, nurse and house young elephants found abandoned by their mothers. Large
quantities of jackfruit, coconut, kitul (sugar palm), tamarind and grass, brought in

daily, form the bulk of the elephant’s food. Visitors can see different elephant’s
events such as bathing in river, drinking milk in the bottle, eating foods and their
playing games.
